Are lotteries “unwinnable”? Why does someone always win the lottery
When it comes to the lottery, many of us sometimes feel like the day we hit the jackpot will only ever happen in our dreams. It doesn’t help when the media starts spreading false information about lotteries.
In this article, we are going to dive deep into the Irish Lotto and explain what really happened if you are unaware.
The ‘unwinnable Irish lotto’
Earlier this year, comments in the media allowed false reports to spread that the 19 million jackpot was impossible to win before a must-win draw for the prize took place in January 2022.
The Lotto jackpot has rolled for a record 7 consecutive months. It started in June 2021 and someone finally hit the jackpot on January 17 this year. The prize was eventually won after a “must-be-won” raffle.
The jackpot had been capped at 19 million in October under lotto rules, and additional funds were allocated to lower-tier prizes to compensate for money not added to the top prize.
Ahead of the January 17 draw, the National Lottery obtained clearance from the regulator to allow the full jackpot to be paid out to the winner of the next winning prize tier – corresponding to five balls plus the bonus number – if six numbers didn’t match, and to the lower level again if no one had won yet.
The seemingly unwinnable jackpot has been the subject of criticism from the public and politicians, leading to the bosses introducing the ‘must win’ aspect. This followed weeks of criticism about how long it took to win the jackpot.
The introduction of the new rules in January means that jackpot prizes will in future remain capped at a maximum of five draws. If there is no absolute jackpot winner in the fifth draw, the entire jackpot fund will be paid out to the next winning prize level.
Why is the Irish Lotto actually the best bet?
Despite the negative reviews about the Irish Lotto, it actually ranks among the top lotteries with the best jackpot odds as well as a substantial £10 million jackpot. Irish Lotto is a great all-around lottery and one of the most popular with UK Lottoland customers.
Those who play the Irish Lotto have a better chance of winning than those who play the UK Lotto. For example, with the Irish jackpot, you have a 1 in 10.7 million chance of winning! However, the odds of winning the UK Lotto are 1 in 45.6 million!
The main draw offers a minimum jackpot of at least £1.4 million, with an additional £900,000 possible with the Plus 1 draw and an additional £225,000 on the Plus 2 draw. This means you have the chance to win 3 jackpots for just £3! A bargain if you ask me!
